“The purpose of the National Beta Club is to promote academic achievement, character, leadership, and service at Sutton Middle School. Sutton Middle School's Jr. Beta Club is a National Honor Society specializing in community and service. We support non-profit organizations to help our school community. The Beta Club is composed of the most hardworking scholars who are determined to make a difference. These students are in the club under requirements and high expectations that separate them from the rest of the students attending Sutton Middle School. Membership is by invitation only. Invitations to join Junior Beta Club will be issued in October based on first semester as well as previous school year's grades. Sutton Middle School's previously inducted members who are in good standing will automatically be eligible to participate in Junior Beta Club for the new school year."

 

Requirements that make a student eligible:

  • Maintain a grade point average of 95% and above maintain no behavior infractions.
  • Commit to missing no more than two meetings per semester.
  • Commit to completing a total of 50 community service hours per school year. (25 hours by the end of the first semester and 10 hours by the end of the second semester)

STANDARDS OF MEMBERSHIP

  • All students must be performing at or above grade level in order to be eligible for membership.
  • Membership registration cost is $25 for the year in addition to SMS PTA Club dues.
  • The academic requirements for membership in the National Junior Beta club are Maintain 95% or higher in all classes.
  • The service requirements for membership in the National (Junior/Senior) Beta club are 50 hours per year. 
  • This requirement will require some alternate days after school and at least one Saturday per month.
  • The character and behavioral requirements for membership in the National Junior Beta club are: Be a positive role model for all students, exemplify all IB Characteristics, and have no school disciplinary infractions . 

 

LOSS OF MEMBERSHIP

  • A member of this National Junior Beta club may be put on probation or dropped from membership for the following reasons.
  • If he/she is absent without a justifiable reason from 10 or more regular consecutive meetings.
  • If his/her academic record falls below 95% 
  • If he/she fails to attain at least half of the service hours without a justifiable reason by end of semester one.
  • If his/her character and behavior warrant a discipline referral or suspension.

 

When a member is put on probation, they will have the opportunity to be added back on the active school roster upon meeting requirements again. When a member is dropped from membership, a record of this action shall be relayed to the National Office of National Junior Beta immediately. Members will be given 9 weeks (1 report card) to bring all grades into compliance. A discipline referral for any reason will result in immediate loss of membership. Failure to meet service hours requirements will result in probation until minimum service hour requirement is met. If the member continues not to meet service hour requirements, they will be dropped from membership.
